Bagan

After Mandalay, we headed over to Bagan. Bagan was AMAZING!!! It's "famous" for all of it's pagodas. Apparently, Bagan was a very wealthy area back in the day & everyone (even the average villager) built pagodas to make merit. There are over 4,400 temples & pagodas in Bagan. The temples were amazing & there were so many that most of the time you were exploring them all by yourselves! We explored some temples, then our guide took us to a Burmese home. Where they showed us how they live. The grandmother showed us how she rolls & smokes her cheroots. These things are the size of a large banana! She gave Chad the one she rolled...I'll post that photo later.

The kids were happy playing with Coke cans.

The kitchen. One of the first things I noticed in Burma was that the women wore a yellow cosmetic on their faces. It was stunning! Here she is making it. It's actually sandalwood that's ground down with water. And she made me beautiful!
And then back to more temples.

We climbed to the top of this one to watch the sunset.

Then we went to a dinner/puppet show. Our guide was really cute. During the day he had been teaching us about Buddhism and asked if we were Christian. I said yes & when we were sitting down to dinner he asked if he could ask me a question about Christianity. I said yes, expecting some philosophical question about Jesus or God. His question: "Is it true that Eve doesn't have a bellybutton?" It took me a few minutes to think of the answer to that one!

The next day, we went to the market.

This vendor was using batteries as a counterweight on her scale.

Then to another temple. This one had a gigantic merit bowl...I wonder if it ever gets completely full?!?

Then another sunset. This time we climbed to the top of the tallest temple...I guess I should say Chad climbed to the top, I made it halfway (those stairs were scary)!

And we enjoyed the local beer at dinner. The next day, we took a road trip. We stopped to visit a dirty-palm farm. They climb to the tops of these palm trees to get this oil that they then make into alcohol, candy, etc. Here's Chad helping out...and yes, he is wearing a skirt. This is what they use to get their drinking water.

Then we went to this temple on top of a mountain. There were monkeys all over the place.

There were 777 steps...it was not fun!But the view from the top...

It was so hot that the candles couldn't stand up straight!
